چکیده

Anecdotal evidence suggests that creative people sometimes use food to overcome mental blocks and lack of inspiration, but empirical support for this possibility is still lacking. In this study we investigated whether performance in tasks assumed to assess convergent and divergent thinking (components of human creativity) is promoted by the food supplement LTyrosine (TYR)—a biochemical precursor of dopamine, which is widely assumed to drive cognitive control and creativity. We found improved performance in the convergent-thinking task while there was no evidence for any impact of TYR in the divergent-thinking task. We argue that convergent thinking might require more cognitive top-down control, which would suggest that TYR can facilitate control-hungry creative operations. Hence, the food we eat may affect the way we think.

Zooming into creativity: individual differences in attentional global-local biases are linked to creative thinking

While recent studies have investigated how processes underlying human creativity are affected by particular visual-attentional states, we tested the impact of more stable attention-related preferences. These were assessed by means of Navon's global-local task, in which participants respond to the global or local features of large letters constructed from smaller letters. Three standard measures...

Prior Meditation Practice Modulates Performance and Strategy Use in Convergent- and Divergent-Thinking Problems

Scientific interest in meditation has significantly grown in the past years; however, so far, science has neglected the idea that different types of meditations may drive specific cognitive-control states. It has been shown that focusedattention (FA) and open-monitoring (OM) meditation exert specific effect on creativity; OM meditation induces a control state that promotes divergent thinking, a...
